Aims

  • Students will have greater awareness of the need to reduce the amount of waste.
  • Students will have greater awareness of the importance of recycling.
  • Positive changes in the behaviour of the students should be observed.
  • Students will improve their communication skills in foreign language and digital competences.

Activities:

The aim of the project is to raise the knowledge of environmental problem related to waste.

  1. Students will find out about waste and recycling.
  2. Everyone who will take part in the project will do research about waste and will collect materials.
  3. In order to raise the knowledge about waste and recycling among students and their families, experts in the field will be invited to give a presentation at school.
  4. Students will visit the institutions where waste is divided and recycled. Before the visit students will make a plan concerning the visit, they will gather the information about the recycling phases. Students will prepare the presentation to the other partners with the information they have gathered.
  5. With the aim of making the project widely known every partner will organize the contest for the banner of the project and the winning banner will be printed and distributed to schools in the neighbourhood.
  6. A quiz involving the students about pollution

RESULTS
The logo of the project, the baner of the project, a quiz about recycling and environment, presentations about waste and recycling, the interviews to measure the awareness about the waste, short stories about waste and recycling, the exhibition with different paintings made from waste, a song about the environment.

Litter bins

Description

The survey distributed in November to students aimed to find out the main causes of pollution in town and if there were adequate litter bins and/or  improper disposal of litter by them at school and to find appropriate solutions to solve the problem.

The questionnaire highlighted there was only one litter bin in each classroom so they asked the local authorities to provide the school with the adequate number of bins. As they had no money students decided to make 4 litter bins for each classroom and start to sort litter.

Description

Field trip to Aspra: students went to the local beach,  picked up litter, sorted each item, recorded them in a data record sheet  (“Marine debris” and “ Not Marine debris” categories) and made a bar graph of the results.

How long does it last?

Description

Students estimated decomposition rates (a few weeks, a few months, may years, undetermined)  of the litter items they found on the beach and identified strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle sea based debries and land based debries.

Composting

Description

Students set up two worm containers (one with soil and  food waste;  the other with soil, food waste and pieces of plastic trash) to observe the decomposition of the organic wastes into humus during the school year. They learnt Composting  offers a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers and reduces landfill waste.

Students started a workshop using fabrics,  paper, plastics to make objects of art as a strategy to reduce pollution.

Project Song

Description

Students were involved in a brain storming activity to write the project song. Then they were split in groups of four and each group  wrote a stanza. The teachers of Italian and Music chose the best three   which were translated into English with the help of the English teachers. The stanzas were mailed to the Swedish partners as agreed during the Transnational meeting in Braga.

Short Stories

Description

Students were informed that the project team had decided a short story contest. Each school project team would have chosen the best one and the writer would have gone to Sweden to introduce his/her work. They were given information about the task: length, setting, characters, …. And they would have worked at school once a week for two hours. The deadline was  the week before Christmas holidays. The work would have been translated into English in January.

Description

The headmistress appointed the members of the Erasmus+ team:

Mr. Antonino Maggiore:  Coordinator  and  responsible of welcoming and accommodating  teachers at the hotel and  and students with host families ( selection and matching students with the host families according to their diet problems, medical requirements, special needs, and their transfer from/to the airport)
